Digitalkameras have taken over the imaging industry. They have made it easy even for greenhorn photographers to take high quality pictures. These cameras often have enormous or expandable memory permitting you to take a couple of pictures at any one occasion. The two zoom functions are distinct.
Optical zoom is commonly called the true zoom of the camera. It is attained by the actual movement of the lenses to draw the image closer. This implies that the image formed still keeps the same quality as it had before. This is because of the fact that the camera's full resolution can still be used on the image which has been zoomed. The levels of the optical zoom are changed by adjusting the space between the camera lenses. These are the same elements on which the zoom functions of regular cameras are based mostly on. Many high quality digitalkameras used by reporters and pro photographers have optical zoom functions.
The second kind of zoom you'll find on many digitalkameras is the digital zoom function. Not like the optical zoom function, the digital zoom function doesn't adjust the distances between the lenses. Instead it enlarges a piece of the image you are viewing. This is the same principle that's applied in your computer's camera. The quality of the image is so influenced. This is because the full resolution of the camera cannot be applied to the zoomed image. Images produced so therefore are not so high in quality as those produced by cameras with optical zoom functions.
Sony Company created a solution for the problem experienced in digital zoom. They developed the smart zoom function. This lets you take stills at a reduced size. Zooming in will expand the picture without endangering its quality. This is a more reasonable alternative choice to the digitalkameras with optical zoom functions as the standard of the picture is still maintained.
