The Key to Safety When Hiking Uncharted Areas
The great outdoor has always been a tempting territory for anybody who loves the sense of freedom it brings. Hiking is one of the excellent sports for people who desire to stay outside and experience the complete sense of contentment and freedom. However, this sport needs complete preparation before being initiated since there are many possible dangers even while enjoying the beauty the wilderness has to offer, the most common of which is getting lost in an unfamiliar terrain.
Established hiking trails are well-marked and would basically be safe for the hikers, allowing them to stay on course. From time to time, some hikers would leave the regular trail and would go exploring or visit a particular site. Now and then, the weather would suddenly change making it hard for amateur hikers to follow or find the trail marks.
In the past many hikers took the precaution of hiring a local trekker to lead them on their hike. Because the trekker was familiar with the region and would have ample experience they were able to assist the hikers a lot. Nowadays, however, technology is replacing the trekker. Today one can purchase a Global Positioning System or GPS which all but eradicates the possibility of getting lost. It enables a hiker to set their course before they even begin their hike and once that information is in the system it then tracks their movement along the course by constantly monitoring their exact location. Because it shows the entire course they set they are able to see exactly where their destination is and can also back-track if need be to their starting point. If preferred there are some GPS units that can even download images such as maps of the area that the hikers are hiking in.
As any hiker knows this is one activity that is rather rough and his equipment needs to be able to rise to the occasion without malfunctioning. The GPS device has to be waterproof so that it will not be damaged if wet, and it needs to be well made and rubberized in order to protect it if it is knocked around a bit. The device you choose needs to be practical and easy to use, providing you with maps and images of the area. As with this model the unit should be small and lightweight to avoid being an extra burden for the hiker. While this is suitable for a short hike it is not for a longer hike and so it would be necessary to have extra batteries on hand.
Safety is the primary concern when hiking in the wilderness and safety means being totally prepared from the clothes and shoes the hikers wear to the extra provisions such as food and water that can sustain the hiker all through out the hiking experience. Most importantly, possessing the fitting equipment and a proper GPS unit similar to DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 Hiking GPS is a must.
