Upcoming caroling competition brings a silver lining to Biltmore Way (Miami Herald)
Some 1,500 youth from 30 local public, private and parochial schools will
again regale the public with holiday music at the 25th annual caroling
competition before the towering poinsettia Christmas tree on Biltmore Way. And
they'll herald the holiday season with everything from Gospel rock to Hanukkah
songs to a cappella Christmas carols.
The free, outdoor Merrick Festival concerts celebrating youth choral
excellence will be held from Wednesday, Nov. 30, through Saturday, Dec. 3,
from 7-10 p.m. each night. The finale of this silver-anniversary edition will
be on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 3-6 p.m. on the street in front of the 500 Biltmore
Way building.
Organizers set out 300 chairs and others bring their own or stand, as
20,000-25,000 music lovers typically attend throughout the highly anticipated
festival - "the easiest way" to catch the holiday spirit, said founder Sally
Baumgartner.
"You sit there and listen to the music you enjoy and you can't help yourself.
It really does kick off the holidays," said Ms. Baumgartner.
In addition to traditional music, "some of the schools do shows with a lot of
dancing and choreography. There are songs for Ramadan and Hanukkah, African
