Sandro Perri - "Changes" (PitchforkBestNewTracks)
Toronto's Sandro Perri has made some interesting music in the last 10 years,
but he's kept a pretty low profile. I know him best through his work as Polmo
Polpo, particular his 2002 collection _The Science of Breath_ and his even-
better 2003 full-length _Like Hearts Swelling_. As Polmo Polpo, he was making
clanging beat-driven tracks that tempered the noise with melodic surges of
pedal steel guitar. It was an unusual mix of elements that didn't sound like
much else. Almost a decade later, Perri is still around, now making song-
driven music under his own name but still ignoring trends.
"Changes", the opening track from his upcoming album _Impossible Spaces_ on
Constellation, comes over like a mix of space disco, the Sea and Cake, Jim
O'Rourke, and Arthur Russell, with a meandering vocal that's less about melody
and more about binding together the tricky instrumental interplay. The first
half of the song is utterly charming as it winds and builds and slows down and
picks up again, but then it really finds its groove about three minutes in.
The second half is positively sublime, a delicate but incredibly funky coda
