Through the years I've learned something. Everyone, and I mean everyone has a basic wish to learn music of some sort! Having played guitar for many years, I am regularly interested to find out how a 'non musician' sees music, so whenever I am out and I speak to new people I often ask if they play an instrument, and even more regularly I ask "if you could ever study any musical instrument on the planet, which one would it be and why?" the reply you might have guessed it's quite usual.
Drums or guitar for boys and piano for girls. I do believe when many people tell me that they really want to learn an instrument, and I also believe them when they hesitantly disclose that they merely can't spare the time required to deal with learning an instrument, let alone purchasing one.
The guitar is subsequently by far the most common musical instrument chosen by people. How come?
After devoting a while considering it I arrived at several conclusions. A big explanation is practicality!
Getting a guitar is definitely cheaper than buying a drum kit or maybe a piano along with being easier to carry around. It's also easier to cover most styles of music using a guitar. You are able to play ballads just as easily as you can play rock anthems. The guitar's got it all!
Granted, people have different aims in regards to what they want to achieve when they learn an instrument,but most people are just pleased to learn a few chords and methods for them to play their favorite tracks, and just play around with the guitar after work. This brings me to my personal favorite reason why people like to play guitar - it's therapeutic.
Some people realize this, and most people smile in agreement when I share this revelation with them. Returning home from work or school and playing a few popular chords while your brother/sister/mate/uncle/evil-monkey-in-the-closet is busy searching the lyrics on their phone or laptop, is just relaxing and enjoyable.
So embrace the desire, act on it, make music...
